Autoethnography

Since its earliest examples, autoethnography has been a subject of controversy. Ethnography itself has a troubled history with something of a stigma from old-fashioned anthropology where, the ethnographer sought to capture the true identity of a culture (Denzin, 1997). It is not the domain of this document to go into the history of the method in detail, but it is worthwhile examining three areas - aims, validity and the friction between analysis and evocation.
